Enrollment Restrictions

If you are a senior looking to fulfill a math requirement and are having trouble enrolling in one of these courses, please consider your other options (sooner rather than later). Contact Lars Wahlbin if you need help selecting an alternate course.

  • Permission of instructor required for enrollment in MATH 1000. Priority will be given to students who need the course to prepare for MATH 1106 or 1110. Interested students must complete a questionnaire at 310 Malott Hall to request admittance to the course. Entering freshmen should apply when they arrive on campus in August. Students who submit the questionnaire by Monday, August 24, 2009 will be notified of their status via email by late Tuesday, August 25, 2009.
  • Enrollment in MATH 1105 (Finite Math) limited to 35 students. Entering Arts & Sciences freshmen were given the first opportunity to pre-enroll, followed by entering freshmen in other colleges. Any spaces that remain or open up during add/drop are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Enrollment in MATH 1220 (Honors Calculus II) limited to 35 students. The enrollment limit was reached during pre-enrollment. Those who are unable to enroll in MATH 1220 should consider MATH 1120.
  • Enrollment in MATH 1300 (Math Explorations) limited to 20 students/lecture. The enrollment limit was reached during pre-enrollment. Any spaces that open up during add/drop are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Enrollment in MATH 1350 (Art of Secret Writing) limited to 30 students/lecture. The enrollment limit was reached during pre-enrollment. Any spaces that open up during add/drop are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

What To Do When a Class is Full

Unless the course is listed in the catalog as "permission of instructor", the instructor can not give you permission to enroll. We do not keep waiting lists. If you had hoped to add a class that is full, please consider the following:

  • If the course has more than one section, do any of the other sections have openings? You may need to rearrange your schedule to add an available math class, or you may need to reconsider taking an early morning, late afternoon, or evening class if they are available.
  • If you are trying to add calculus, multivariable calculus, or linear algebra and the entire course is full, try back a little later in the day or the following morning. It may take us a while to notice that the course is full, but when we do we usually raise the caps a little. Keeping in mind that we do not monitor enrollments overnight and on the weekend, if you don't see some activity after 4-5 business hours or if this is the last day for you to add, contact Heather Peterson for assistance.
  • If the course is one of many that can be used to fulfill a requirement, what is your second choice? (For guidance in selecting an appropriate alternative course, please consult First Steps in Math and/or your faculty advisor.)
  • If the course is not required for your major and it is not a prerequisite for a major requirement, can you take it in a different semester?
  • If you have considered all these strategies and are still having trouble adding a required course, contact Heather Peterson for assistance. Be sure to include your name, college, class standing, and any details you consider to be relevant to your situation, including what requirement or prerequisite you are trying to fulfill.

Independent Study (MATH 4900)

Students who wish to take MATH 4900 must fill out an independent study form, which can be obtained at the Arts & Sciences Academic Advising Center in 55 Goldwin Smith Hall. After the form has been completed and the necessary signatures obtained, it must be returned to Academic Advising.
