Math 224, Honors Linear Algebra and Calculus, Spring 2005

Announcements:

Jan 25: For any enrollment questions, see Arletta Havlik in 310 Malott Hall, tel: 255-4013.
Feb 17: You can find a lot of relevant information on inner product spaces, orthogonal polynomials, Gaussian quadrature, etc in these lecture notes (courtesy of Prof. Hubbard). This is actually a rather large part of the sequel to our textbook. The chapters of immediate relevance are 8.11 + parts of 8.3 and 8.4.
Mar 22: The prelim will be held on Thursday, 03/31/05, 7:30-9:00pm in 406 Malott Hall.
A list of sample problems is available.
May 6: The final will be held on Thursday, 05/19/05, 3:00-6:30pm in 219 Baker Lab.
A list of sample problems is available.
The time/date/location of the review session will be announced soon.

Course Description:

Math 224 is an advanced introduction to linear algebra and to differential calculus of several variable functions. (Topics include: vector fields; line integrals; differential forms and exterior derivatives; work, flux, and density forms; integration of forms over parametrized domains; Green's, Stoke's, and divergence theorems.) The material in this course will be presented in a concrete but rigorous fashion -- we will use examples to illustrate and gain intuition for the theory and we will use proofs to understand and mathematically justify the theory. You will be expected to read and write proofs, and one of the goals of this course is to develop this skill. Be prepared for a significant workload -- somewhere between 10 and 15 hours of work outside of lecture per week.
