Information about the exams -- Math 222, Spring 2008
Prelim 1: Tuesday February 19, 7:30-9:00 PM. The exam is closed book. No calculators or notes are allowed. It will cover all the material on the first four problem sets, up through Section 3.5.
Here is a practice prelim, consisting of problems taken from last year's prelims, with solutions. The problems on our prelim will not necessarily be similar to those on the practice prelim, but will probably be closer to the sorts of homework problems we have had.
Here is a copy of the first prelim and solutions for it. The median score on the exam was 75/100.
Prelim 2: Thursday March 27, 7:30-9:00 PM. The exam will cover all the material since the first prelim, from Chapters 5 and 6 of the book, up through problem set #8. The rules are the same as for the first exam: closed book, no notes or calculators.
Here is the second prelim and solutions for it. The median score was 83. A rough scale of grades is A: 90-100, B:77-89, C: 55-76, D: 40-54, F: 0-39.
Here is a practice prelim 2, with solutions.
Final Exam: Friday May 9, 9:00-11:30 AM. The exam will be cumulative, covering the whole semester's work (excluding the optional section 8.6 that was not covered on the homework). There will be some emphasis on the material since the second prelim, with perhaps as much as 60-65% of the exam on this material. You will be allowed to use one page of notes (front and back) that you write up yourself. (Creating such a page can be a helpful process in studying for the exam as well as being useful during the exam itself.)
Here is a practice final (the actual final exam from Spring 2007) with solutions.
Here is the final exam itself, with solutions.
The last three problems were somewhat difficult, so the median grade on the exam was only 113 out of 160. The highest score was in the 140's. If you want to find out your score on the exam, you can contact your instructor or the TA.
