Instructor and contact info: My name is Alan Demlow, and my office is located in Malott Hall 201. The best way to reach me is by e-mail; my address is demlow@math.cornell.edu. If you have to get ahold of me quickly for some reason, try 5-0126 during the day.

Meeting time and place: MTWF 12:20-1:10 in Upson 211.

Office hours and location: Office hours will be held Tuesday afternoons 1:30-3:30. These are subject to change the first couple weeks of the semester, so stay tuned.

Course web page: http://www.math.cornell.edu/~web111/

Course Reading: The text for this course is readable (although reading any math text may require a little more effort than other sorts of texts), and I expect that you will familiarize yourself with the sections before I lecture on them. This doesn't mean that you need to be ready to answer exam questions on a given topic before I cover it in class, but you will find lectures much more beneficial if you have familiarized yourself with the material beforehand.

Homework collection and grading: Homework will be assigned each week, and will generally be due by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday of the following week (the exact day varies a little, so pay attention to the homework schedule). On each assignment, there are "Problems to hand in" and "Other problems to do". You must hand in the problems specified, and you are responsible for the material covered by the other problems even though you need not write them up to hand in. You may work together on homework (in fact, I strongly encourage it), but you must write up the assignment yourself. An undergraduate grader will be responsible for grading your assignments. If you need to hand in your homework at a time other than class time, it can be handed in to the appropriate folder in the math office in 310 Malott Hall. Because homework solutions will be posted at the time the homework is due, late homework will be accepted only in extenuating circumstances, and usually only if I am aware the homework will be late before the time it is due. 20% of your final grade will be assigned based on your performance in section; of this 20%, 14% will be based on your homework scores.

Homework solutions: Homework solutions be available on the course web page the Tuesday afternoon the homework is due.

Quizzes: There will be quizzes about once per week excluding exam weeks; I expect to have about 10 during the course of the semester. I will collect and grade these. The main purpose of the quizzes is to give you extra practice doing problems and to give me some extra feedback about your level of understanding. However, the scores will be recorded and will count for 4% of your final grade (or 1/5 of your section grade).

Class participation: A small amount of your section grade (1/10, or 2% of your final grade) will be determined by your class participation. By "class participation", I mean whether you attend class regularly and are involved in class discussions by asking (or answering) questions.

Course Attendance: I expect you to be in class regularly and promptly, although attendance will not be recorded. I usually hand homework assignments, course materials, etc. out at the beginning of the class, so tardiness may result in you missing inportant information. Please be here on time!
