Basics
  • Syllabus: Read this! (some info may be outdated, important dates are up to date on this page).
  • Textbook: A. Adler, J. E. Coury, "The Theory of Numbers: A text and source book of problems", unfortunately, this book is out of print! However, the editor has authorized Cornell to print copies, which are for sale at the campus store.
  • Other books: I expect everyone to consult other references. There are many books out there on number theory, and many of them can be found in the library (see http://math.berkeley.edu/~ribet/115/other_books.html for a list of many good books). You should try reading from other books; other points of view may give you better insight. The following are strongly suggested:
* L. Childs: A concrete introduction to higher algebra. Second Edition. Springer. (Will use some of the material in this book)
* K. H. Rosen: Elementary Number Theory and its Applications. Fourth Edition. Addison-Wesley.
* Joseph Silverman: A Friendly Introduction to Number Theory. Third Edition. Prentice Hall.
* U. Dudley: Elementary Number Theory.
  • Adobe Reader: Many documents will be available in pdf format. You will need Adobe Reader in your computer to read the documents. You can find it here (for free).
