An introduction to Fermat's Last Theorem and modularity lifting
Tuesday, October 24, 2017 - 4:30pm
Malott 406

Fermat's Last Theorem asserts that there are no integer solutions to $X^n+Y^n=Z^n$ for $n\geq 3$ such that $XYZ\neq 0$. Viewed in context this is a fun fact (precipitated with some hard mathematics) which in very loose terms is a consequence of the expectation that symmetries that arise in arithmetic (as Galois representations) can be realized as symmetries in geometry.

In this talk I'll describe the perspective of modularity lifting from the standpoint of some of my recent work and current interests.

Refreshments will be served in the lounge at 4:00 PM.
