In the late 1960s Richard Thompson introduced three groups - $F$, $T$, and $V$ - which have since played important roles as examples in group theory. For instance both $T$ and $V$ are examples of infinite simple groups. Still, many basic questions about these groups remain unresolved. This talk will focus on the smallest and best known of these groups, Thompson's group $F$.
