L. Valiant conjectured an algebraic analog of the famous P v. NP problem, namely that one cannot write the permanent polynomial for mxm matrices as a determinant of size nxn when n is a polynomial in m. I will give an overview of this question and geometric approaches to it. The geometric approaches include invariant theory, syzygies, and dual varieties.
