An introduction to Stanley-Reisner theory

Since its inception in the 1970s, the Stanley-Reisner correspondence between simplicial complexes and squarefree monomial ideals has led to major progress in both combinatorics and commutative algebra. In this talk, I will give a self-contained introduction to the theory and describe some applications. These include Hochster’s formula, which relates multigraded betti numbers to simplicial homology; the relationship between shellability of a simplicial complex and Cohen-Macaulayness of an ideal; and connections between the $f$- and $h$- vectors in combinatorics and Hilbert functions in commutative algebra.
