Add/Drop for Fall 2013 Classes
See the University Registrar’s Fall 2013 Semester Start-Up for more detail, but here’s an overview:
| Fall 2013 Class Standing | Add/Drop Starts | Last Day to Add | Last Day to Drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate, JGSM, and law students | August 12 | September 11 | October 18 |
| Seniors | August 20 | September 11 | October 18 |
| Juniors | August 21 | September 11 | October 18 |
| Sophomores | August 22 | September 11 | October 18 |
| Freshmen and Vet students | August 27 | September 11 | October 18 |
October 18 is also the last day to change the grade option for a course. October 19–November 22, course drops are by petition only and a “W” will appear on the transcript. November 22 is the last day to petition to withdraw from a course.
For guidance in selecting an appropriate course, please consult First Steps in Math, your faculty advisor, or director of undergraduate studies Birgit Speh.
What To Do When a MATH Class is Full
We do not keep waiting lists. If you are having difficulty adding or changing a math class, please note the following:
- Unless the course is listed in the catalog as “permission of instructor,” the instructor can not give you permission to enroll.
- In the early part of the add/drop period, students make a lot of changes to their schedules, so sections may open and close several times due to adds and drops. If you are interested in a specific time that is currently closed, you may find an opening if you check several times throughout the day. After a day or two, if you still don’t find an opening, you should consider your other options.
- If the math section you want is full but other sections are available, you may need to tweak the rest of your schedule to add an available math class, or you may need to reconsider taking an early morning, late afternoon, or evening math section if one is available.
- If you are trying to add calculus, multivariable calculus, or linear algebra (other than MATH 1220 or 2310) and the entire course is full, try back a little later in the day or the following morning. We may not notice immediately that the course is full, but when we do we usually raise the caps a little. Keeping in mind that we do not monitor enrollments overnight or on the weekend, if you don't see some activity after 4-5 business hours or if this is the last day for you to pre-enroll, contact Heather Peterson for assistance.
- If you are unable to resolve a conflict between a required math course and another required course for your degree, contact Heather Peterson for assistance. Be sure to include your name, college, class standing, and any details you consider to be relevant to your situation, including what requirement or prerequisite you are trying to fulfill. Accommodations will not be made for conflicts with preferred first-year writing seminars or physical education classes.
Enrollment Restrictions
If you are a senior looking to fulfill a math requirement and are having trouble enrolling in one of these courses, please consider your other options (sooner rather than later). Contact Birgit Speh if you need help finding an available course.
- MATH 1105 (Finite Math) is limited to 55 students.
- Enrollment in MATH 1110 (Calculus I) and 1120 (Calculus II) is limited to 30 students/lecture. Spaces will open up during the add/drop period as students adjust their schedules. Entering freshmen whose intended majors do not have a math requirement or whose interests are strongly aligned with the arts, languages, humanities, or social sciences are strongly encouraged not to enroll in MATH 1110 or 1120 before discussing other enrollment options with a faculty advisor.
- Enrollment in MATH 1220 (Honors Calculus II) is limited to 35 students. MATH 1220 is a challenging option for students who enjoy spending many hours doing mathematics. Those who are unable to enroll in MATH 1220 should consider MATH 1120.
- Pre-enrollment in MATH 1350 is restricted to Arts & Sciences students. Enrollment is limited to 55 students. Any spaces that remain and those that open up due to drops will be made available to all students on a first-come first-served basis to students in all colleges during the add/drop period.
- Enrollment in MATH 1710 (Statistical Theory & Application) is limited to 25 students/discussion. Students who are unable to add MATH 1710 should consider AEM 2100, ILRST/STSCI 2100, or PAM 2100. (See also First Steps in Math: Introductory Statistics.)
- MATH 2230 (Theoretical Linear Algebra and Calculus) is limited to 40 students. MATH 2230 is a challenging option for students who enjoy spending many hours doing mathematics. Those who are unable to enroll in MATH 2230 should contact Birgit Speh for assistance in selecting an appropriate available course.
- Enrollment in MATH 2310 (Linear Algebra with Applications) is limited to 33 students per lecture. Students who are unable to add MATH 2310 should consider MATH 2210 or MATH 2940.
Independent Study (MATH 4900 and 4901)
Students who wish to take MATH 4900 or MATH 4901 must fill out an independent study form, which can be obtained at the Arts & Sciences Academic Advising Center in 55 Goldwin Smith Hall. After the form has been completed and the necessary signatures obtained, it must be returned to Academic Advising.
