Study of Mathematics Outside the Major

Minors and Concentrations in Mathematics

Although the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Mathematics offer no minor in mathematics, some other scientific departments in the college offer, within their own majors, concentrations in mathematics and mathematics-related fields. A student interested in such a concentration should consult the Director of Undergraduate Studies of his/her major department.

The Engineering College offers a Minor in Applied Mathematics, sponsored jointly by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, which is administered by the latter department.

Choosing Upper-Level MATH Courses

Undergraduates who wish to pursue serious study of mathematics, whether within or to complement their own major fields, are encouraged to consult with a faculty member in the Mathematics Department. The department's Director of Undergraduate Studies (Lars Wahlbin) and other faculty can provide assistance in selecting appropriate areas of study and individual courses. Students are also encouraged to read the publication Is There Life After Calculus?, which describes (in plain language) the different fields in mathematics that are represented at Cornell.
