Summer Math Institute Visiting Faculty Positions

The Summer Mathematics Institute at Cornell (SMI) aims to prepare undergraduate participants for the rigors of graduate school. We target students who have just completed their junior year, but finishing sophomores and seniors are also eligible to apply.

SMI 2012 is expected to run from approximately June 9, 2012 to August 4, 2012 with 12–14 students from underrepresented groups participating. Subject to funding, we seek applications for two faculty positions:

  • A faculty member is needed to teach a course at the level of Cornell's honors undergraduate analysis course (MATH 4130). The course will meet five days a week with evening problem sessions.
  • A faculty member is needed to supervise student research projects. The research projects will be similar to REU projects, but with a smaller time commitment to allow students adequate time for course work. In order to complement the course work, we seek a faculty member who can direct research projects in an area other than analysis.

Both positions will be supported by teaching assistants. Applicants should be committed to our mission of providing a supportive and encouraging environment for SMI students. Candidates with a Ph.D. in mathematics or a closely related field are preferred.

Deadline for applications: January 15, 2012

How to Apply

Applicants are required to apply through MathJobs.org (www.mathjobs.org). For full consideration, please submit an application with all supporting materials by the deadline stated above.

Applications must include the following:

  • curriculum vitae,
  • a statement of purpose,
  • two letters of reference.

Reference letter writers should be asked to submit their letters online through MathJobs.org. If they are unable to do so, they may send their letters by email to math_recruit@cornell.edu or to the following address: Recruiting Committee, Department of Mathematics, Malott Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853-4201 USA.
