Pre-enrollment Restrictions

  • Permission of instructor is no longer required for enrollment in MATH 1000.
  • Pre-enrollment in MATH 1106 is limited to 120 students. Students who are unable to add MATH 1106 should consider MATH 1110.
  • Pre-enrollment in MATH 1340 and 1710 is restricted to Arts & Sciences students. MATH 1340 is limited to 30 students per lecture, and MATH 1710 is limited to 100 students with a discussion limit of 25. Any spaces that remain and those that open up due to drops will be made available to all students on a first-come first-served basis during add/drop.

For guidance in selecting an appropriate alternative course, please consult First Steps in Math and/or your faculty advisor.

What To Do When a Course is Full

Unless the course is listed in the catalog as "permission of instructor", the instructor can not give you permission to enroll. We do not keep waiting lists. If you had hoped to add a class that is full, please consider the following:

  • If the course has more than one section, do any of the other sections have openings? You may need to rearrange your schedule to add an available math class, or you may need to reconsider taking an early morning, late afternoon, or evening class if they are available.
  • If you are trying to add calculus, multivariable calculus, or linear algebra and the entire course is full, try back a little later in the day or the following morning. It may take us a while to notice that the course is full, but when we do we usually raise the caps a little. Keeping in mind that we do not monitor enrollments overnight and on the weekend, if you don't see some activity after 4-5 business hours or if this is the last day for you to pre-enroll, contact Heather Peterson for assistance.
  • If the course is one of many that can be used to fulfill a requirement, what is your second choice? (For guidance in selecting an appropriate alternative course, please consult First Steps in Math and/or your faculty advisor.)
  • If the course is not required for your major and it is not a prerequisite for a major requirement, can you take it in a different semester?
  • If you have considered all these strategies and are still having trouble adding a required course, contact Heather Peterson for assistance. Be sure to include your name, college, class standing, and any details you consider to be relevant to your situation, including what requirement or prerequisite you are trying to fulfill.

Independent Study (MATH 4900)

Students who wish to take MATH 4900 must fill out an independent study form, which can be obtained at the Arts & Sciences Academic Advising Center in 55 Goldwin Smith Hall. After the form has been completed and the necessary signatures obtained, it must be returned to Academic Advising.
