MATH 651
Spring 1999
Introductory Algebraic Topology
Instructor: Allen Hatcher
Time: TR 10:10-11:25
Room: OH 218
This is the basic introductory course in algebraic topology.
The main topics are fundamental group, covering spaces, and homology.
You can get a more precise idea by looking at the textbook "Algebraic
Topology I" available online at www.math.cornell.edu/~hatcher.
The course will cover most of Chapters 1 and 2, with some additional topics
from Chapters 0, 1A, and 2A. If time permits, we may also have a brief
look at cohomology. Prerequisites: basic point set topology and abstract
algebra (mainly group theory), as in standard undergraduate courses in
these topics.
