The MSC operates on the premise that you will learn mathematical concepts best by doing problems and practicing regularly.  Study capsules and tutoring assist in refreshing your memory, filling gaps in your math background, reinforcing class work, helping on difficult topics, or reviewing for exams.  MSC services are available weekdays and Sundays throughout the semester.

Free Tutoring

Experienced tutors are available for free individual and small-group tutoring.  For an individual tutoring appointment, sign up on the schedule posted outside 256 Malott Hall or call the Math Support Center.

Independent Study Capsules

Compact study capsules address topics from pre-calculus to calculus and allow students to work at their own pace.

Also available in paper form:

  • functions
  • infinite series
  • max-min problems
  • multiple integrals
  • polar coordinates

Resources

  • A small library of math texts helps students to broaden their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Classes, tutorials, workshops, and individual consultations help students develop effective learning strategies.

The Learning Strategies Center is part of the Center for Learning and Teaching, which offers a variety of services to assist students in reaching their academic potential.

Academic Support Courses

MATH 1005, 1006, 1011, and 1012 meet weekly to supplement lecture material, answer questions, and provide tips for effectively learning the material in MATH 1105, 1106, 1110, and 1120.  Students who enroll in a support course receive one transcript credit (depending on college) and tutoring services.  There are no exams or homework assignments.  Students receive S/U grades determined by attendance only.  Students who do not wish to enroll are invited to attend the classes but cannot utilize the tutoring services.

Free Tutoring at the LSC Statistics Lab

The LSC offers free statistics tutoring on a walk-in basis during the academic year to students enrolled in MATH 1710, AEM 2100, PAM 2100, SOC 3010, PSYCH 3500, and H ADM 2010.  The lab is located in 421 CCC, staffed with tutors 4 evenings per week, and equipped with computers and course-related statistical software for each of the supported courses.  For further information, visit the Statistics Lab web site at or contact lab coordinator Patty Alessi.
