Community OutreachThe Cornell Mathematics Department maintains close ties with Ithaca High School, other area schools, and the community at large. More detail on the following and other outreach activities may be found in our Math Matters newsletter. Various opportunities develop, including speaking in area school classrooms, working with teachers, and tutoring students. Saturday Workshops for Math Teachers (MATH 5080)The department's director of mathematics outreach and K-12 education activities, Mary Ann Huntley, plans and leads a series of four full-day workshops annually for area secondary mathematics teachers, a program begun in 1985. Participants investigate the role of technology in teaching mathematics and explore math history and concepts related to the topics they teach. For more information: Participation at one workshop is not prerequisite to attending another. Workshops for spring 2012 will take place on March 10 and April 21. Agendas will be posted here in the weeks leading up to each workshop. Mathematics Awareness MonthApril is Mathematics Awareness Month. Expanding Your HorizonsExpanding Your Horizons is a national program aimed at encouraging middle-school girls’ interest in math and science and motivating them to continue taking math and science courses throughout high school. Members of the Mathematics Department participate annually in a day of hands-on workshops in mathematics for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls.
